War destroys everything in its wake. Even when a war is over, it’s never really the end of it. The aftermath is devastating. There are many casualties that the affected nations have to deal with for years to come. Among them, civilians and the nation’s economy suffer the most from the consequences. Wars also disrupt the environment and the political infrastructure of the nation. War also leaves excessive amounts of pollution in its wake. More damages are caused when oil is spilled into various water bodies and stretches of land, leading to the destruction of entire ecosystems. Crops and the natural resources in the vicinity are destroyed. People’s livelihoods are taken away in this way.

17 to 20 million people were killed during World war I. And then, in World War II, the death toll rose to 50 to 60 million fatalities.

Following wars, pandemics are likely to break out. Other side effects include famine and poverty, leading to malnutrition and deadly illnesses. Taking the incident of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in mind, we can get an idea of how the people living in Japan are facing the effects of war to this date.

Apart from direct damages, people often suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome because of all the atrocities people have witnessed. This includes civilians and soldiers alike. War also takes away the livelihood of people and threatens the lives of refugees. Many economic damages take place in the aftermath of war as well, disrupting the social and political values that affect norms, ideologies, and communities.
